David Gautereaux                                    October 15, 1948 - October 26, 2018

Michael Vaughan                                                                                               CHS Class '63                                                                                               posted this on FB after Dave's memorial service on 10/31/18

I was privileged to attend a memorial service today for friends and family of David James Gautereaux, CHS Class of 1966. Dave had been a sergeant in some form of Air Force intelligence collection in the late 60's from a remote base in Vietnam that was subjected to defoliant spraying around its perimeter with Agent Orange. Dave had been in the band with me during my final year at CHS. We were young then, so long ago, but Dave held on to memories of me for some reason and he got us together again for the memorial service held for Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of Saigon, aboard the USS Midway. He had invited me to attend in order to honor my classmate and the last Marine to die in Vietnam, William C. Nystul, CHS '63. Dave had been for years fighting the effects of treatment for prostate cancer brought on by the daily Agent Orange exposure he endured back then. But he never let on about it to me except to mention it one time we had lunch together. He and his wife Ruth were one of the most loving and connected couples I have ever met, and today she honored him beautifully, which she announced to the audience she was able to do today "courtesy of Xanax". In keeping with Dave's sense of humor, he had asked that the music to be played as his casket was rolled down the aisle for its final disposition to be "In a Gadda Da Vita". Ruth told us in advance that it was going to be a surprise! What a good guy we lost last Friday. Thank you for what you did for veterans during your lifetime Dave.

Am I the only one who noticed that the birthdate attributed to Dave might be off?   Did he get held back if he was born in the year of 1945.  I am pretty sure that year is 1948.

You are correct about the year Don. The California Birth Index (1905-1995) gives the following information:

Name: David James Gautereaux
Mother: Wells
Birth: 15 Oct 1948 San Diego, California

Susan, where do you find this information/website?

Dave's information has been corrected.

It certainly seemed odd to me; however, went with what the Memorial program listed - so glad we have the correct information now - thanks to each you for catching this and Sue for finding the correct year:)

In my "been there done that" existance, at least currently, I am also a genealogist, so I just hit my database subscription for ancestery.com.  Now if you prefer to not have to pay through the nose for one of their subscriptions, you can head over to the Mormon site, Family Search, and tap into it for free.
